A year ago, our family discovered "Blackbeard the Musical" when we were buying music from Mr. Rob Gardner's non-profit website, Spire Music. We make it a practice to have several copies of The Price of Freedom on hand to give away when people ask us for good music recommendations. This time, while online, we came across the penetrating blue eyes of Tyler Maxson on the cover of "Blackbeard the Musical" and were intrigued.
Already feeling the sting of not owning the music from "12 Princesses" and not having been able to see any performances of Blackbeard (we currently live in Utah, and, sadly, moved away from Australia a few years before Blackbeard's debut there--if only we had known!), we felt compelled to purchase a copy of the compact disc, and that was the beginning of our love affair with "Blackbeard the Musical".
From the intensely passionate "Take Me Instead" to the stirring "When This Is Finished" to the zany and mustard loving antics of Mr. Bonnet, we have laughed, oohed, aahed, and, yes, even shed a tear or two as we listen and sing along with this musical.
How Mr. Gardner was able to get us to feel compassion for Blackbeard without feeling sympathy was amazing. While we felt for him, we knew Lt. Maynard was right, and wanted to shout "Edward--let go of your pride!" What a unique genius it is to be able to get the listener to love a character and yet, at the same time, despise him! Of course, Tyler Maxson's wicked laugh when he talks to Anne on the ship goes a long way to help, too.
We just wanted a place where we could find others who have heard the amazing music and who would like to be able to actually see it performed--so it is with good intentions and good humor that we present to you Blackbeard: The Musical: The Unofficial Fan Site.
